Self-Description: I'm a typical or garden variety geek. I spend my time fixing computers,
toting science fiction, rotating hobbies, sleeping as little as possible, eating
things that seemed like a good idea at the time, behaving obsessively, fixating
upon silly details, and pretty much doing all of those geek things.
I've been described as rabid, and I can't really deny it; I'm always up for a
good rant.
I oscillate between sociable and irritable. I REALLY like smart people, and am
lucky enough to know a lot of them. Especially ones who will put up with the
irritable times. I use way too many parentheses and commas, but heck, I like
'em.
Children: None (despite mother's imperious requests for redheaded
grandchildren....)
Interests: Being a proud possessor of freakish recessive genes (myopia, besides
the obvious one, and are there myopic websites out there if I look hard enough?)
I've always had a strong interest in genetics and biology. I got sidetracked
into computers, though, so now it's computers and only tiny dabblings into
biology. My strengths are in system administration, and I'm learning network
administration the hard way. I really LOVE this work.
Since I spend approximately 99.94% of my time working at a startup right now (or
it seems like that's how much it is, and I HAVE been known to work pretty much
in my sleep), I don't have time for much else, but here's what I've been
sandwiching in lately (order not relevant to importance):
Sleeping. Learning how to paint miniatures (for a D&D campaign that's starting
up soon). Researching Ancient Britons (for painting hints and cultural hints
for the aforementioned game). Not gardening, but occasionally thankful for the
fact that the garden is still alive despite savage neglect. The occasional bit
of collaborative digital art, which I'm bad at but I love color so I try.
Playing Asheron's Call, mostly to chat or to hunt with my husband. Occasional
nice dinners out with friends. TV, but only the "good" shows (okay, Buffy and
Angel....) Giving up on organizing all my zillions of stupidly named files.
Messing around playing with webtoys. Reading all the time, usually fiction of
the science or fantasy persuasion, but sometimes nonfiction sneaks in. Comics,
which I list separately because, um, it's lots of comics (Poison Elves, Knights
of the Dinner Table, Starman, Hellboy, Transmetropolitan, and the incomparable
Finder are highlights). Reading in the bathtub. Petting the neighbor's cat.
Admiring what other people do with their gardens. Snuggling with my sweetie.
In the past, I have been known to garden, bicycle distances which seemed fairly
improbable for sedentary-me beforehand, geek out thoroughly on both of these
hobbies and buy way too much stuff, buy supplies and research hobbies that I
never quite got up to speed on (fabric painting and dying, color is my nemesis),
game enough to actually feel like I was gaming enough, and cook enthusiastically
if not always well. It seems probable that these will resurface at some point
in the future, but right now work has eaten that time.
More: Redhead moments: when I was a kid, and I'd be asked to draw a
self-portrait in class, I would use brown and orange and yellow and maybe a
little bit of red crayon and mix them. The other kids would say 'you can't do
that! You're a redhead! Use a red crayon!' It always confused me; redheads
don't REALLY have crayon-red hair. Couldn't they see the difference?
