Self-Description: The name is Rachel, . . . Ms. Rachel if you're an ILP resident, and Aunt
Rachel if you are one of Courtney & Sean's 9+ children.
I think love and truth are the most important things in life, and sometimes I
even think they're the same thing. Hablo enough espanol to get myself into
trouble. When I was in college I studied Psychology. Part of me loves the
science of the natural world. I still think it would be cool to be a scientist
of the outdoors. If you dig the Meyers-Brigg, I'm very much an INFP.
Relatively recently I joined the Roman Catholic Church after being, well, a very
spiritual person. There's this little dream I have about living by the bay here
in VA, and having a sea kayak. I would take it out to the beach whenever I felt
like being a part of the salt water & the sky. And in August, when pods of
dolphin come in and play by the shore, when humpback whales are spotted not to
far from the tourists traps, I can skim out across the waves on my kayak and
visit with my ocean bound brothers and sisters.
About a week ago, I moved back to my hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia from
Atlanta. Over the past year I've been living there in a house with 6 other
people. Imagine the Real World, but substitute the cameras with the trial &
error lifestyle of trying to live in Christian community. Its been such a full
year. In the past couple of weeks I've been roadtripping all over from Baton
Rouge to Baltimore. At the moment I'm taking an employment hiatus and
hanging out in VA for a couple weeks. After I'm rejuvenated (hopefully), I'll
be moving to Athens (GA, not Greece) to live a trailer with some nuns and a
handful of young women who aren't nuns and help open a house of hospitality for
the immigrant Mexican community that lives there. And to tell you the truth,
all this transition has me exhausted! No more! Please! Aaahha!
Children: Up until about a week ago I had somewhere between 8 and 11 kids. They
were all between 17 and 21. And they weren't so much the fruit of my loins as
slightly younger siblings-to-my-heart that I coached and counseled in a
transitional group home. I miss them all. They sent me a going away card, and
one of them wrote me a rap that ended in "In let yo play haters be yo
motorvaters". Sigh . . . and then there's my godson. Aunt Rachel loves you
Cody!
Interests: The conglomeration of Psychology, Philosophy, & Spirituality.
Teenagers. People fascinate me. I thrive on learning about us.
Latin America/South America/Central America
Art
Cars (hooray for 1964-73 Ford Mustangs!)
Hiking, fishing, swimming, . . . just about anything that's done outdoors
Over the course of this past year I've discovered that I love the South, and I
love driving through it, exploring new places with people I care about.
More: Let us not be satisfied just by giving money. Money is not everything. Money
is something you can get.
The poor need the work of our hands, the love of our hearts.
Love, an abundant love, is the expression of our Christian religion.
