Redheads were very few where I grew up, I think the only redheads were myself and my sisters. The most common name called to us was 'carrot top', I hated it, carrots are orange, and my hair was not orange! When I had moved to Iola and started going to school there, the red hair became more popular, there were at least 2 other girls in my class that had natural red hair, so I didn't feel so 'odd ball-ish'. My older sister and I were called Big Red and Little Red. One other nick name that I got called was 'Rusty', that one I didn't mind so much, better than being called 'carrot top'.

Sure, I was teased for having red hair. However, I seem to remember all the kids getting teased for whatever was "wrong" with them. My red hair was the easiest target, being the only redhead in school, or even in town. That didn't really bother me -- at least I wasn't the fat kid, stuttering kid, ugly kid, etc, etc. It could have been much worse.

What really did bother me was the lack of attention from the boys, from about age 12 to maybe 20 or so. Red hair, freckles, curls and pale skin just weren't attributes the guys thought were pretty. Thankfully, that seems to have changed.

Unfortunately, I was born with mousy-brown hair (not saying that's a bad thing, it just isn't for me!) and I've been dying my hair since I was 16. I've always loved the bright reds...the ones you can see coming from a mile away. People that I meet seem to think redheads are more fun. My personality seems to bloom and I have so much more self-confidence when my hair is my favorite shade of red!

As a child I always wanted brown hair, or blonde but I was not teased about my hair color other than the knicknames, such as: CarrotTop, RedHead, Red, Firetop, Pippi, Raggedy Ann and I heard sayings like "Red on the head like a dick on a dog" which is probably the most offensive one I have heard. As I got older I came to love my hair color and ESPECIALLY the fact that it makes me more unique.

I hated growing up redheaded. I felt like such an oddball, all the teachers and grown ups thought I was so cute. I even dyed my hair brown in high school to look like everyone else and paniced at the last minute and tried to rinse it out. Only to be left with brown and red streaked hair. Now I love my hair color, I love being different than everyone else. So, usually when a guy wants my attention is when I hear 'hey red'. The only one that has ever kind of bugged me was when people would call me carrot top. the actual, top tops of carrots are green!
