I grew up very different from everybody else. My father loved long hair and would not permit his daughters to cut their hair. We all had very long hair and I was teased alot in grades school because my hair was down to my butt. My father also wouldn't permit us to use curling irons, so my hair didn't have any real style to it when I was growing up. So combining the length and the lack of style, I was teased alot. As each of us girls in the family turned 16 years old, our father then permitted curling irons and we were given the opportunity to cut our hair. Every girl in my family did just that when they turned 16 except me. There were 4 girls including me and two of us were redheads. I, being a natual redhead, was already pretty smart at that point (age 16) and I already knew that 99% of guys preferred long hair on girls. So, I cut and styled the top and sides and left the length to my waist in the back. All of my sisters boyfriends made comments to them asking why their hair wasn't long like mine! And the best part, is all the guys who teased me so badly in grade school were lining up to date me in high school. They adored the long red hair!

I think the most creative comment regarding my hair that I've had was on the 4th of July when an EXTREMELY good looking guy came up to me and asked if I would make an American flag with him ( he said he would dye his hair white and his other hair blue) and let his friends take pictures. He tried so hard he even said it was my national duty to represent the American flag in any way I could.

The most interesting thing that's happened would definitely be my experience in Ireland...Although I have some Irish heritage, I had never been to Ireland in my entire life...While I was there, I was approached by quite a few people who assumed I was actually from Ireland and began speaking in Gaelic/Irish to me...Baffled, I did not know what to say, so I would respond in a combination of French and English (the only two languages I know) until I was taught a few simple phrases in Gaelic...That usually baffled them as much as me!...

I was born a natural redhead. The nurses at the hospital told my mom that I would be a real redhead because my eyebrows and eyelashes were red as well. I did not get teased, I just got more attention because of my red hair. My parents do not have red hair and my sisters do not have red hair, so I stuck out and people noticed me more. I got embarrassed when people told me how pretty my hair was and how they wished that they had hair like mine.
I was the special grandchild because until last year, I was the only grandchild (and I was their first) with red hair- just like my Grandfather's hair! Now their final (we hope) grandchild is here and he too has red hair! So now, PopPop has two grandchildren with red hair like his. Maybe soon he will have a great grandchild with red hair too!

I hated my childhood. For some reason, there aren't any redheads around where I live. I live in the "Panther Valley coal region" which is composed of small mining towns in Pennsylvania from the late 1800's and early 1900's. There are about 5 towns within a 3 mile radius and do you think out of all of those towns have I ever seen more than 5 other redheads? It's really unbelievable-and embarrassing for a teenager growing up. God, I really hated it when that "carrot top" guy became popular because all of the boys my age said I looked like him. And what the hell is a "redhead rubber scrubber"? I've been called that 10 million times I bet and I am still trying to figure that one out. Oh yeah, and the whole "redheaded stepchild" thing is a little annoying too. It doesn't make sense either, am I really dense or does it even have any meaning other than people trying to make redheads feel like the ugliest people on the planet? When I was young the only people that complimented me were the elderly-which really helped my social life a lot. I felt like either jumping off the nearest bridge, or hanging out with a bunch of senior citizens.
