I was teased incessantly! However, as bad as my memories are of teasing, my
theory is it made me a stronger, kinder person, so I can't diss it too bad.
I also had to dilate my eyes every single morning, which meant I had
BIFOCALS that TURNED DARK OUTSIDE. It wasn't a pretty sight. Often I
couldn't distinguish between those teasing me for my hair or my snazzy
bifocals.
I have to say I felt like I was every veggie in the garden. I was called
carrots, carrot-top, squash-head, tomato-head... you name it. If it was red
or orange, I was called it. Though I don't remember being called kiwi-head
or anything.
My only comback was, "Carrot tops are green." Very clever, no? Didn't stop
anybody, of course. Kids can be little snots.

Yes I still get called "Red" or "Little Red" at
least once a day. The truth is that my hair is my
identity. It's how people remember me, it's how they
know me. So does being called "Red" or "Little Red"
piss me off? No. Do I like it? Not really. I resented
all the names I was called when I was younger but they
have made me who I am today. I have met several
redheads that hate being redheads and act as if it
were a curse. Well I love being a redhead, so I was
teased a lot, grow up, move on, learn from it and it
will make you a stronger person.

One of the many crap pick up lines I've had, this is
one of the most annoying! "So are you going to tell
me if all redheads are into bondage or do I have to
find out myself?" I mean what?? Bondage?! Where the
hell did he get that from? Kinda worked as I sure
felt like whipping the hell out of him after that!

Oh growing up as a red head or a "ginger nut was an absolute nightmare.
I was cursed with also being an army brat which meant we moved schools a lot.
It's not only tough being the new kid in school, but a red head?
I had to endure constant teasing about being everything from a rusty nail to a
duracell battery, (copper coloured top).
But now that I'm all grown up red hair is much appreciated. One thing I hate though,
and that's when you're in the local supermarket and some old lady will come up behind me
and suddenly grab my hair. If that's not enough they start saying, "Oh isn't it beautiful."
Then the standard question, "Is it your natural color?"
This is usually followed by the story of how they always wished they had red hair,
and of course they have to mention that second cousin twice removed that was fortunate
to receive it in their family.

I AM a natural redhead, but it hasn't been a particularly bold or noticeable red since I was a baby. Some people say I'm not a redhead but they (a) don't know what they're talking about, (b) see my hair in the wrong lighting, or (c) are absurdly picky. I did get occasional comments in school but it was never really a central focus. Yeah, I grew up different from everyone else, but being a redhead was among the least of those differences.

I didn't really like my natural color until I was around 18. I was always teased and called carrot top even though my natural color was not orange, it's strawberry-blonde, although as I get older it seems to be getting darker, more of an auburn.
