One funny experience that I had because of my hair was while in college. I was crossing central campus heading for class, just a tad bit late. It had been raining so I had my umbrella up, but half-way across this open area in front of the library I realized that it was no longer raining. So I closed my umbrella. Just then I see five or six guys standing in front of the library pointing at me. I wanted to bolt. I thought, wait a minute don't let them freak you out! They made a bee-line for me and proceeded to try and convince me to go out with one of them. Turns out that it was a fraternity thing where they had to ask a red-head to this formal dinner they were having. This poor guy begged me to go. Used the "Wouldn't it be cool to be at a dinner with all these other red-heads??" then "PLEASE!!! Do you know how few red-heads there are on this campus???" I said "I'm sorry, I'm late for class..." and kept walking. Looking back, I should have said yes. Not for him, but to be in a room with that many red-heads!!!

When I was a child I was all all eyes, teeth, freckles and this mane of red hair. To make it worse, both my parents were brown eyed, dark complected and dark hair. I was convinced "I must be adopted". Every science class I would drill the teacher on recessive genes, convinced someone else had to be my parents. I then saw a photo of my Ukrain grandfather with his red hair and red beard, blue-green eyes...I looked like his daughter.

If anyone ever comments about my appearance, it's ALWAYS about my hair. I like it. I'm proud of my hair color and the heritage it came from. It's like the ultimate icebreaker. What better way to approach someone than with a compliment? Or even a curious question. I'm always asked things like, "Is it natural?" "Do you highlight?" "Does anyone else in your family have red hair?" "Are you Irish?" And more often, people want to comment about the redheads they know, or things ABOUT red hair that they know such as "My niece has hair just a little darker than yours. She hates it, but everyone else is so jealous of her!" or "I tried to go red once, but I could never get it quite right." And there are endless directions for conversation to go from there (and not just hair product tips). My hair has lead to conversations about travel, children, pets, careers, you name it, red hair can lead up to it. Maybe it's just my personality, but being singled out because of my hair color makes me feel like an individual - distinct from the bland, brown and blonde masses. If I wasn't already red, I'd dye it just to get the attention.

I used to have long, flowing locks. Now that I am grown I love to experiment with my hair by cutting it short and letting it grow and cutting it again! The fact that it's red makes the process even more exciting!

I love it when people comment on my hair. When it was long it was always, "Your hair is so beautiful!" (Which was nice). Now that it's short and funky, I get alot of "That style is so much fun!" But I do still get major props for the color.

[Many of us feel like we have an unspoken bond with each other. Do you feel this way about other redheads?] Yes!! Example: We just moved into a new house and while driving through our neighborhood, I noticed that the girl across the street had long, red hair too!! We immediately bonded and are now great friends. Most redheads have similar attitudes and personality traits. I think that's why we click with each other. Didn't hurt that we both love wine...(This is just my personal opinion.)

Even though I dyed my hair a lot when I was in high school, I LOVED my natural auburn hair! Hell, I still do! I've managed to go two years without dying it, which is a record for me! LOL Luckily, I never got teased for it.

One of my best friends is a red head (and was one of the early members of this site, just as I was)! She's the only friend I can go clothes shopping with that won't try to get me into something that will look horrid with my hair.
